They are tools used for migrating XP applications to Windows 7 and performing tests related to application compatibility against Windows 7, Microsoft App-V, Citrix XenApp, Windows Server 2008 R2 as well as compatibility for web applications

These tools check for application compatibility issues and “examine installation files and application code, looking for the applications’ requirements for Ring 0 usage (ie the highest level of system access) and problems with permissions or user account controls, that Microsoft introduced in Windows 7 to curb unauthorised applications…” (ComputerWeekly.com article)

Citrix bought App-DNA in 2011. One of the components of App-DNA is App Titude, a software platform used for Application compatibility and Migration Testing. Citrix has a PDFcalled Best Practices document on App Titude that gives you an idea of the scope of the product.

Competing on the same market space as App-DNA, there is ChangeBase. Quest acquired ChangeBase in October 2011 and Dell acquire Quest in July 2012. So, this acquisition allowed Dell to add ChangeBase to its software portfolio of management tools. ChangeBase, which has a software platform called AOK that: “…allows you to automate application testing and application remediation, application packaging, as well as application virtualization conversion to accelerate readiness…” as presented here

Since the world is quickly becoming “virtualized”, these tools will become even more important as many big companies are thinking about the next level of migration from Windows XP to Windows 8 or from Windows 7 to Windows 8 or the new App-V5 technology from Microsoft.
